How to get through Lockdown v3.0: Obituary cocktail

OK, so the How to Get through Lockdown miniseries has had to take a turn due to lockdown in the UK getting worse.  As we write, about 80% of the UK population is in an even tougher lockdown than the end of December 2020; going outside of our homes apart from for essential trips is now forbidden.

If you look at our Episodes pages, you'll see that we have taken the opportunity to get our introductory season on sherries out.  We received feedback that more detailed content would be helpful to help through this strictest of lockdowns.  You ask; we deliver.

That said, some people are still feeling like their hopes for a better start to 2021 have died.  At Last But One Drinks, we are still feeling optimistic, but we have to confess that various new year's resolutions have very definitely passed on already. . . !

To honour those faded hopes and resolutions - and to help us all build our way through Lockdown v3.0 - we thought that the Obituary cocktail might be appropriate.  The recipe below is our version of the classic Obituary, with one tweaked ingredient.  We swap out absinthe in favour of pastis; you get the same aniseed-y hit and you also get a pleasing haze to the body of the cocktail.

Ingredients

60 ml London dry gin

7.5 ml dry vermouth

7.5 ml pastis such as Ricard

Method

Chill a coupe or martini glass.

Stir the gin, vermouth and pastis over ice for 25 seconds.  Double strain into the chilled glass.

Express a lemon twist over the surface of the drink and drop it in.

Raise the glass in remembrance of those hopes and resolutions - and toast the better future which is on its way.
